Tragedy on Route 460 Claims the Life of Local Deputy
A heartbreaking incident along Route 460 in Campbell County has taken the life of a dedicated law enforcement officer who stepped in to safeguard others. On Thursday, August 6, Deputy Burlie W. Duvall III of the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office was killed in the line of duty after being struck during a chain-reaction collision. The 33-year-old Concord resident died at the scene, leaving his family, fellow deputies, and the local community grieving a profound loss.
How the Incident Unfolded
The Virginia State Police reported that emergency dispatchers received calls around 5:34 p.m. concerning an eight-vehicle pileup along the westbound lanes of Route 460, approximately four-tenths of a mile west of Cabin Field Road.
Moments before the catastrophe, Deputy Duvall and a second deputy from the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office were commuting home after completing training at the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy. Upon coming across a separate, earlier accident, both officers immediately pulled over to render aid and direct traffic. To protect motorists and create a safe work zone, they positioned their patrol cruisers in the two left lanes and activated their emergency lights.
As the deputies assisted at the site, a tractor-trailer approached the area. Investigators stated that the truck driver swerved abruptly to avoid colliding with the parked emergency vehicles. In the course of that sudden maneuver, the tractor-trailer hit Deputy Duvall.
Impact and Immediate Response
First responders acted quickly to assist their fallen colleague, but Deputy Duvall succumbed to his severe injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The secondary chain-reaction crash ultimately entangled eight vehicles in total.
Medical personnel evaluated multiple victims on site and transported approximately seven injured individuals to regional hospitals. Authorities noted that while the injuries varied in severity, none were believed to be life-threatening.
Remembering Deputy Duvall’s Service
The death of Deputy Duvall has brought deep sorrow to the Appomattox County Sheriff’s Office and law enforcement agencies throughout Virginia. Duvall was killed while performing a duty fundamental to first responders: pulling over to help people in distress. His loss highlights the constant, inherent risks faced by police officers, firefighters, paramedics, and highway workers every time they operate near active lanes of traffic.
To those who worked beside him, Duvall was more than just a colleague—he was a trusted friend and a devoted public servant. His family, fellow deputies, and neighbors now honor the memory of a young man who spent his final moments protecting his community.
Status of the Investigation
The Virginia State Police crash reconstruction units are actively investigating the multi-vehicle collision. Investigators continue to gather evidence to piece together the full sequence of events that led to the tragic accident.
